Random little coolant hose on the mustang decided to split. Luckily it happened right down the street from the shop so now I’m trying to find some spare hose to replace it with. Dunno what I’m gonna do to replace the missing coolant. Can this fucking mustang not keep its shit together for more than 10 consecutive days? God damn.

Seems like a lot of other fomoco stuff during that time. Once one plastic cooling part breaks means you need to replace all of them.

We had one just like that blow on our V6 Ford Tempo. Had to whittle the replacement down because it wasn’t quite the right size; PITA to wedge into place also.

Mustang: By Volkswagen. I mean, the engine is German after all.

Who swapped the green coolant in?

Aren’t they supposed to have green coolant? That’s what was in it when I got it.

Nope. As per the Owner’s manual for the 2006 Mustang, page 210:

Add Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant (yellow-colored), VC-7–A (U.S., except CA, OR and NM), VC-7–B (CA, OR and NM), meeting Ford Specification WSS-M97B51–A1. Note: Use of Motorcraft Cooling System Stop Leak Pellets, VC-6, may darken the color of Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine Coolant from yellow to golden tan. • Do not add/mix an orange-colored, extended life coolant such as Motorcraft Specialty Orange Engine Coolant, VC-2 and VC-3 (US) or CXC-209 (Canada), meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44–D with the factory-filled coolant. Mixing Motorcraft Specialty Orange Engine Coolant or any orange-colored extended life product with your factory filled coolant can result in degraded corrosion protection. • A large amount of water without engine coolant may be added, in case of emergency, to reach a vehicle service location. In this instance, the cooling system must be drained and refilled with a 50/50 mixture of engine coolant and distilled water as soon as possible. Water alone (without engine coolant) can cause engine damage from corrosion, overheating or freezing. • Do not use alcohol, methanol, brine or any engine coolants mixed with alcohol or methanol antifreeze (coolant). Alcohol and other liquids can cause engine damage from overheating or freezing. • Do not add extra inhibitors or additives to the coolant. These can be harmful and compromise the corrosion protection of the engine coolant. For vehicles with overflow coolant systems with a non-pressurized cap on the coolant recovery system, add coolant to the coolant recovery reservoir when the engine is cool. Add the proper mixture of coolant and water to the “FULL COLD” level. For all other vehicles which have a coolant degas system with a pressurized cap, or if it is necessary to remove the coolant pressure relief cap on the radiator of a vehicle with an overflow system, follow these steps to add engine coolant.

Well, green coolant is still compatible with gold, if not as full of corrosion preventers and other goodies.

It has obviously not been babied. I’m planning on shining it up this weekend, grabbing my stack of receipts for all the shit I’ve done to it, and getting an appraisal from CarMax and maybe a couple other dealers. If they offer me enough to get me out of my loan ($5k) I’m getting rid of it and buying something older. Probably a 95-96 Roadmaster station wagon. Something I can fix with a hammer. Shit, I bet the LT1 Roadmaster gets better fuel economy than this Mustang does. Seriously one of the worst buying decisions of my life.

Murder-Bed?

Buying a used car; especially a droptop is always a gamble. Buying a droptop used Mustang with the base motor is an even bigger one. It sounds silly, but I’ve always been a fan of purchasing a car with the upgraded engine if one was available; new or used. It may have seen a few more holeshots or track time depending on the car, but generally they seem to be more well cared for....

Yeah. Thing is I needed transportation immediately, and I couldn’t get a car loan for anything older than 2005. A non-car loan would have utterly raped me on interest because of my lack of credit.
